What are Goji Berries?

The Goji fruit is nicknamed the “happy berry” because of the sense of well being it is said to induce. The Goji Berry is a small red berry which is native to certain remote regions of China, Tibet, and Mongolia.

These small red berries have played a central role in Chinese medicine for thousands of years, but it was not until just recently that scientists in the rest of the world discovered what was in the Goji Berry that made it so powerful.

They are nutritionally rich in antioxidants, particularly carotenoids such as beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. One of zeaxanthin’s key roles is to protect the retina of the eye by absorbing blue light and acting as an antioxidant. They are also packed with Vitamins C, B1, B2 and other vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids.

Goji berries are usually found dried. They are shriveled red berries that have a similar shape and chewy texture as raisins and a mild tangy taste that is slightly sweet and sour.
